About us

The Financial Advisers Act established a Commissioner for Financial Advisers and required this person to appoint an independent Code Committee of between seven and 11 members.

We developed and now maintain the Code of Conduct for Authorised Financial Advisers.

The current members are:

David Ireland, Wellington (Chair)
Partner, Kensington Swan
18 years experience in financial services law. Chair, Workplace Savings New Zealand.

Ross Butler, Nelson
Professional and independent director
Former Executive Chair and Director of GIO Financial Services Australia and chair of the Institute of Financial Advisers of New Zealand (IFA)

Shane Edmond, Christchurch
Manager of Retail Broking, Forsyth Barr Ltd
22 years experience in stockbroking/investment adviser industry.

Prof. Dimity Kingsford-Smith
Professor of law at the University of New South Wales Law Faculty.
She teaches and researches in the areas of financial services regulation, corporate governance and online investing regulation.
Current positions include: Chair of the Conduct Review Committee of the Financial Planning Association, member of the Australian Financial Advice Standards and Ethics Advisory Panel, member of the Australian Society of Legal Philosophy and the Julius Stone Institute.

David Russell, Wellington
Consumer issues consultant and director
Directorships include: Chair, Telecommunications Dispute Resolution Council and member of the Real Estate Agents Licensing Board. Former Chief Executive of the Consumers' Institute.

Michael Staal, Auckland
Joint Managing Director of: New Zealand Financial Planning Company Limited, NZFP Asset Management Limited and Auckland Financial Services Limited

Gary Young, Auckland
Chief Executive, Insurance Brokers Association of New Zealand Inc (IBANZ). 27 years experience in insurance broking.
